🗓️ General Notes
</aside>
- I used the opera but since this was recorded, I have now switched to Edge.
- And I even predicted that if I switched, I would switch to Edge! And I did!
- We started a “Book Club” in 97 & Up, but it’s not your typical book club.
- It’s more of a Show & Tell for any book you’re reading right now.
- Think And Grow Rich
- I’ve started going back through Think and Grow Rich and making notes.
- I spent a lot of time on Chapter 2, going back and supplementing my notes.
- The idea is to master the content and know exactly how you’re going to apply it.
- As of this writing I am now only on Chapter 5, because chapters 3, & 4 have a lot of details to outline, and then in Chapter 3 you’re instructed to answer 4 questions and then write it up in a statement you will say aloud everyday morning and night.
- Singleness of purpose - you have to become obsessed with your goal.
- And you shouldn’t share it with anyone.
- When you are serious about doing something, you don’t talk about it.
- You just do it.
- It will take me months to get through this book because of the way I am going through it.
- The Daily Stoic
- Josh likes “stoicism” which is a philosophy on how to view life.
- Life can throw problems at you, and it’s a matter of how you choose to react to them.
- AI defines Stoic:
- A stoic is a person who follows the philosophy of Stoicism, which emphasizes self-control, rationality, and the acceptance of fate. Stoic philosophy teaches that individuals should focus on their own actions and virtues, rather than external events beyond their control.
- The E-Myth
- Make sure you get the E-Myth Revisited (see links above)
- If you’re a great accountant, why would you work for someone else making them money, when you can do it for yourself?
- A lot of people just create “jobs” for themselves.
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
- My therapist keeps reminding me that I need to read this.
- Especially as I often write and talk about forming routines to accomplish goals.
- TimesUp!
- Josh was not a fan of value pricing, but he LOVEs this idea.
- Now he feels that this is a business model where you will learn to really enjoy doing what you do and have a really good life doing it this way.
- Getting Things Done
- A Mind like water.
- Drop a rock in a calm body of water.
- The water has a perfectly proportionate reaction to the stimulus.
- The whole concept of getting things done is about how to achieve a mind like water.
- You’ll have a system you know you can trust.
- Where you can capture, clarify, and organize anything you need to do.
- Our brains are not that good about reminding us about the things we need to do at times that are convenient.
- How to Win Friends and Influence People
- Josh’s pick.
- How to deal with people.
- Be like a dog.
- They are very loyal and always excited to see you.
- But it has to be genuine.
- If you do this with people it will make them feel good, and they can’t help but like you.
- In Between Books
- We talked about taking care of your employees for a bit.
- I had a client sell his business.
- He had a guy working as his #2 guy in the company, and when I saw what he was getting paid I was disappointed.
- When he sold his company, I asked him if he was taking care of his #2 guy and he said, “yes” but something tells me it was a lot less than I would have given him if I were in my client's shoes.
- I mention a few times that if you are reading any books in the self-help genre, you had better be taking notes and treating these books like textbooks.
- When I went back to school after leaving for a couple of years and working as a stockbroker, I learned a new philosophy about studying:
- I got my first test grade in accounting 101 and it was only around a 70.
- I talked to my brother about it, because I did NOT go back to school to get mediocre grades.
- My brother gave me some great wisdom here:
- He told me to get an A for the day every day, and then the semester would take care of itself.
- So here’s what I did:
- I took copious notes in class.
- Then went home, opened the textbook, typed up my notes and supplemented them from the textbook.
- All I needed to do after all of that, was review the neat, typewritten notes for 15 minutes before the test and I aced my tests
- Most people if asked to take a test again a few months after cramming would fail.
- There three levels of understanding:
- You read something and you understand it.
- You have knowledge of it (usually you’ve reviewed it once or twice) - you can talk about it.
- You have it mastered - you will never need to study or review it again. The knowledge is yours.
