I help accounting firm leaders get unstoppable engagement from their team, create deeper, lasting impact with their ideal clients, and gain tremendous personal freedom.

Having made partner of my family firm in Greenville, SC and achieving a lot of outward success, I found myself in a place of burnout, frustration, and longing for a better way. Although we had just built a swanky new building, I wanted to embrace a more flexible and remote culture for our team and offer more proactive services for our clients. I also had been consulting with firms and had a strong passion to maximize my impact with small businesses through helping firm leaders directly. So I left... In July of 2020 I started my own virtual advisory-based firm to experiment with new models and launched GroupUP to help accountants rise, better serve their teams, their clients, and get back more of their time.

Letting go of the security of the partner title and pay and stepping out on my own caused some unfortunate and very painful relational ripples. It was the hardest thing I've ever done and is still an ongoing struggle.

But, now, I've seen more of the country than I ever have before, I've spent more time with my wife and boys, am in a better place financially, and have met so many incredible firm leaders and build some deep relationships.

I owe it to my wife, two boys, to be a present husband and father. I owe it to my team to empower them and treat them the way I'd want to be treated. I owe it to our profession to help us let go of things that have held us back and embrace a better way that leads to more freedom, fulfilment, and impact in life. It's what I'll be doing with my life. That, and hiking, woodworking, and exploring new cities.

Together, we can radically change our profession and communities for the better!

Joe started with the "family (CPA) firm"

Joe is an artist at heart. Wanted to go into Architecutre.

The family business was the "natural, easy thing to do."

Went through a hard couple of years - visions started to diverge. No right or wrong, just different.

Joe offered to either buy the firm, or bow out.

He was a work-a-holic and was feeling burnt out. Working 100+ hour weeks and wondering...

Why am I doing this?

At one point they lost 100% of their firm over a 2 year period

Joe counted these people as friends and colleagues.

What do I want from life? From my Career?

Joe broke away during the pandemic:

"If You're Going to Create Chaos, Do It Right!"

We all struggle with this - the leader is losing his / her team and good clients, and wondering, "what can I change?"

So Joe launched his own virtual firm during the pandemic so he could serve clients the way that they need to be helped.

Then he said, "why not help other leaders do this?"

This is how GroupUp was born.

Nobody should have to work 80-100 hours per week.
